The western terminus of the Middle East's first railway. The railway was opened in 1892. Trains officially took around 3.5 hours to go from Jaffa to Jerusalem but very often the 54 miles took six hours to complete. The line is one-metre gauge, ie, the gap between the rails is that measurement. It is narrower than the so-called standard gauge (1.44 metres wide) so that the constructors could save money by not having to excavate so much soil! The railway was the finest transport experience in modern-day Israel until recent redevelopment.
The opening day witnessed the sacrifice of three sheep - but the sheep got their revenge as the locomotives could not get a good grip on the rails because their wheels skidded on the blood from the sheep!!!
