مشاركة Cember Michael في تاريخ 11 نيسان، 2007 #14937 This is the dome of the Abuhav Synagogue (Note the sign in the lower right hand corner). The synagogue was originally built in the 16th century, by the sage, Rabbi Ya'akov Beirav, who had been a student of Rabbi Yitzhak Abuhav, the great sage of Castille (Spain). It was last rebuilt following the great earthquake of 1837, which levelled 90% of the city. While the synagogue itself collapsed, the wall containing the 3 Holy Arks remained standing, and the Torah scrolls contained in them were unharmed. One of the Arks holds a Torah scroll dating from the 15th century, which supposedly was written by the hand of Rabbi Abuhav. This Torah is today used only during Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashannah and Shavuot. The synagogue is in the ancient Jewish quarter of the city, and was never in non-Jewish hands.
