Return to al-Ramla

Posted by The refugee on February 27, 2001

The story of my family is the same as that of all palestinians , Al Ramla was their home land the only place they called home , as all palestinains they were forced to leave Al Ramla . My grandfather who was blind (Ahmad) With Seven Girls behind him, along with my grand Mother (Zakeiyah) were asked to leave the town before the Zionest attack , but they beleieved then as most of Al Ramla inhabitents that this is only a phase and that will return back to Al Ramla no later than a few days. Well the few days turned into years ,and the years into decades ,and when My grandpa went back to Al Ramla he went there merely as a visitor to a place that once he thought was his, to a house that he biuld with his own hands. The house was already given to a jewish family that agreed to let my grandfather in to see what was once called his.He started moving around the house, touching everything thought he can't see but he has a heart that felt his home. HE suddenly Asked about a Lemon Tree in the backyard of the house, they took him to the Lemon tree Where he started touching and smelling the branches of the tree with tears coming down his eyes.Along Back his trip to Ramallah where he settled after leaving Al Ramla, he kept holding the lemon branch that was the only memory of his house and his land ...well he kept holding that branch till he passed away with the branch beside his head simply it reminded him of home Al Ramla.
